The Legacy Collection represents Proprietor Anthony von Mandl’s vision to showcase the Okanagan Valley’s diverse microclimates. Each wine is the pinnacle expression of more than three decades of viticulture, sustainable farming, and winemaking experience in our estate vineyards. Exceptionally limited production, each of these rare wines see attention to detail in the extreme.
It all begins in the vineyard. Using decades of experience walking the rows of Mission Hill’s estate vineyard along with GIS mapping technology to pinpoint the most desirable blocks, winemaker Darryl Brooker works closely with James Hopper, director of viticulture. The most suitable clones are selected to perfectly match the soil and climate in a specific tight area within a growing region. Vineyard slope, canopy management including effeuillage (leaf pulling), and highly controlled drip irrigation come into play as well. A weather station network in the vineyards constantly monitors conditions so that the crew can react immediately to changes to ensure exquisite fruit development. After tasting the grapes over a length of time ensuring optimum juice-to-skin ratio, our winemaker calls the “pick,” the perfect moment to begin harvesting based on his determination of when the grapes are at their optimum flavour. Specially designated blocks are hand-picked and hand-sorted, often one side of a vine row on one day, and the other later, guaranteeing that only grape clusters that are perfectly ripe are harvested.
Once the fruit arrives at the winery, minimal handling occurs, as grapes are gravity-fed into small specially-designed French oak fermenters. After fermentation, the next destination is a careful transfer to French oak barrels with toasting levels depending on the varietal and the winemaker’s desire for that wine’s profile. As the wine components independently age in our temperature-controlled underground barrel chai that was created by blasting through volcanic rock, they are continually tasted by the winemaker. After multiple rounds of tastings, blendings, and micro-adjustments, the final lot blending occurs with our winemaker Darryl Brooker, renowned Bordeaux consultant Michel Roland, and proprietor Anthony von Mandl, with only the best selected. Before limited release, the final blend is tasted by the winemaker and proprietor.
This collection is a labour of love for everyone involved and the purest expression of our vision of the finest that the Okanagan Valley offers.
