Vines at Akarua were first planted in 1996 and further vineyard development has progressed in the intervening period. In 2014, Akarua purchased a further 50 hectares in Felton Road and Lowburn, bringing their total vineyard acreage to approximately 100 hectares.

A small vintage was produced in 1999 from the new Akarua winery and over time as vine age increased along with knowledge of the site, quality has been on the rise year by year. Since Akarua Pinot Noir’s first trophy awarded in 2002 by Air New Zealand Wine Awards, a Trophy has been awarded for each vintage since 2009 to date, proving the continuing consistency and quality of our flagship pinot noir.

Akarua KOLO is a selection of exceptional barrels of wine crafted from Akarua Estates ultra-premium KOLO block situated at our Felton Road Vineyard.

  • Only 90 cases were produced.
  • VARIETY – 100% Pinot Noir
  • REGION – Bannockburn, Central Otago
  • VINEYARD – Akarua Estate, KOLO Vineyard
  • VINTAGE – 2015
  • Growing Degree Days: 940 GDD.

Growing conditions: Cool and unsettled spring conditions meant a slightly later bud burst and slow vine growth early in the season. Fortunately things stabilised and warmed in time for flowering in mid-December. Late summer we had relatively moderate daytime temperatures, but with excellent diurnal temperature’s (Warm days, cool nights). A cool drawn out finish gave us a long slow ripening and increased flavour intensity.

Our KOLO block produced 80 individual barrels of Pinot Noir from the 2015 vintage. Assessed as being truly representative of our site, the vintage and Bannockburn Pinot Noir, the best four barrels only were selected to blend KOLO. Individual barrels were chosen for the ability to express the finest elements of the site and to add an extra layer of complexity, harmony and length.

  • Colour & Nose – Deep, Bright Ruby. Fragrant violet florals mingle with spicy dark berry fruit.
  • Palate – A dense mid palate with a sumptuous depth of black fruit, savoury flavours and sweet spice. The fine tannin structure leads you to a strong, long finish with spicy red berries.
